Post 1986 Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Montgomery County Police Department ‘s Explorer Post 1986 to provide every member with the best possible learning environment for anyone interested in law enforcement as a career and for those who want to have a good time. To the best of our ability, we will provide the most fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote excellence, duty, honor, leadership, good moral character, and other valued life skills. We are also committed to assisting the Police Department and citizens of Montgomery County when and wherever possible.

WHAT is Law Enforcement Exploring?
Law Enforcement Exploring is a co-educational, hands-on program sponsored by the Boy Scouts of America and a sub division of Learning For Life. Every Post is sponsored by a law enforcement agency (local departments of police and sheriffs and federal agencies: Secret Service, Boarder Patrol and the Department of Drug Enforcement Administration (D.E.A.). The Montgomery County Department of Police has been a sponsoring agency since 1974.

WHO are Explorers?
Law Enforcement Explorers are youth between 14 – 20 years of age, who gain invaluable experiences intended to assist them in learning about the many aspects of Law Enforcement as a career. Explorer Post 1986 is administered by the Captain of the Training Division.
WHERE are classes held?
We are physically located at the Public Safety Training Academy (9710 Great Seneca Highway, Rockville, Md. 20850). The program is administered by a Senior Advisor and a host of Assistant Advisors. We use experts to provide training in: traffic stops, domestic crisis intervention, emergency field first aid, burglary-in-progress, crime scene search, hostage negotiation, white collar crime, crime prevention, arrest and search techniques. Training also includes: financial planning, report writing, interview skills, public speaking, leadership skills, field trips and anything that will promote the goals of the Post.
WHY join the Explorers?
Members of Explorer Post 1986 participate in Ride-A-Longs, they assist patrol officers with non-hazardous duties such as traffic and crowd control, office duties, crime prevention campaigns, and funerals. Explorers also benefit the community by fingerprinting children, participating in parades, assisting at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair and assisting other non-profit organizations in the administration of their stated goals. Many volunteer activities qualify for Student Service Learning Hours and the Post is a Department of Education approved organization:

Members of the Post understand the importance of and meaning of duty, honor and commitment. Post members develop a good work ethic, leadership skills, self-confidence, and discipline.
Qualified Explorers have the opportunity to participate in the bi-annual National Law Enforcement Conference where each member has an opportunity to match his/her skills against Exploring Post from around the country. During non-competition years, eligible Explorers participate in the local Exploring Youth Leadership Camp where they compete against Posts from the Washington metropolitan area.
WHEN are classes held?
- Meetings are held from 6:00 pm – 8:30 pm
- Classes are held from the first Wednesday, at the beginning of the public school year, to the last Wednesday in the public school year.
- If the public schools are closed on Wednesday, because of a teacher’s professional day or because of snow, the Explorers will not meet.
- If Wednesday afternoon and/or evening school activities are cancelled because of snow or other inclement weather, the Explorers will not meet.
